Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone
The first novel of the Harry Potter heptalogy was named as “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone” in United Kingdom, but was published in United States under the name “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone”. It was written by J. K. Rowling and published on 30 June 1997 in London.
As of January 2008, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone is the twelfth best selling book in the world of all time. However it is the third best selling book excluding the religious, political books. A feature length movie has also been made by the same name, “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone”. Till 2008, this movie is the fourth highest grossing movie in the history of world box office.
“Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone” starts with the downfall of the brutal, cruel and pitiless rule of Lord Volemort on the wizarding world. It was followed by the celebrations of the wizards. The “boy who lived” – Harry Potter was transported to his only living relatives – the Dursleys, where Harry Potter was supposed to live for the next eleven years, till he is eligible to be admitted to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
After spending eleven dreadful years with the Dursleys like a poor servant, Harry Potter received an admission notice to the wizarding school. Dursleys tried to keep the truth from Harry Potter but then Rubeus Hagrid himself comes and tells Harry Potter the truth about him and his family and invites him to Hogwarts.
A month later Harry Potter travels to Hogwarts from Platform Nine and Three Quarters from Kings Cross Station. Harry Potter makes new friends for the first time in his life. The notables among these friends were Ronald Weasley, Hermione Granger, Neville Longbottom. On reaching Hogwarts, the sorting hat put Harry Potter into Gryffindor House. Harry was also inducted in the Gryffindor House Quidditch team as their youngest seeker player in over a century.
Harry Potter received his father’s invisibility cloak from an unknown sender and also came to know about the “Mirror of Erised”. The strange mirror always showed Harry Potter along with his family members. The following events included the breaking in at the wizarding bank, Gringotts, Harry Potter catching the snitch to win the first game for his house, Hermione suspecting Professor Snape for jinxing Harry Potter’s broomstick.
Harry Potter and his friends came to know that Lord Voldemort is trying to get to Philosopher’s Stone – a stone which gives eternal life and is made by Nicolas Flamel. They successfully stopped the evil wizard from gaining an access to the philosopher stone. At the end of the year ceremony, some points in the form of “Last-minute additions” were awarded by Albus Dumbledore – the school’s famous headmaster. The points were awarded to Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, Hermione Granger and Neville Longbottom. These points help the Gryffindor house to lift the House Cup. This ended the six year consecutive run to lift the House Cup by their rival house Slythrin.
“Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone” ended with Harry Potter being recognized as a young hero to save the wizarding world once again.
