Ralph Fiennes’ chilling Voldemort transformation
How does Voldemort get his evil glow? Ralph Fiennes has personified the evil Dark Lord since Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire when he regained a human body. The Oscar-nominated actor embraced playing the ultimate villain in the Harry Potter films and says the hours in the makeup chair helped him to get into character. Ralph Fiennes as Voldemort sports a snake-like “nose,” heavy brow sans eyebrows and a pale bald dome. A recent video from Harry Potter: The Quest takes viewers behind the scenes of the magical transformation, showing fans just how the wicked effects were created.
How long does this sinister makeover take? At least two-and-a-half hours for Fiennes, who viewed the time as essential to his portraying the full evilness of You-Know-Who. “A certain look that you have helps you locate who you’re being. You look at yourself in the mirror, you see this face, and you say, ‘I know who I am,’” Fiennes told MTV News.
As Voldemort on the set of Harry Potter, Ralph Fiennes automatically commanded a certain respect and even intimidated his fellow cast mates. “Ralph is mesmerizing,” Tom Felton, who plays Draco Malfoy, said. “He never did two takes the same…I had to keep reminding myself: ‘Stay in character. Don’t just sit there and watch his performance.’ He dominates scenes in the film, and it’s like that off the set as well. He’s quite a charming guy. And when he opens his mouth, people listen. Let’s put it this way: No one talks over him.” And Daniel Radcliffe, who as Harry Potter gets the most face-time with Voldemort, admitted, “When Ralph’s doing his Voldemort stuff, he just really freaks me out.”
Whether reading the books or watching the Harry Potter movies, Voldemort is the stuff of nightmares and continues to haunt our dreams! “He’s really sort of the devil,” Ralph Fiennes said. “He’s completely emotionally detached. He has no empathy. You find that in psychopaths.” Psychopath indeed. Maybe these behind-the-scenes peeks will diminish his frightening effect? Not so much!
